Strand One

Poetry in Care Homes

Culture Co-operative is a project that aims to reach and engage individuals within the community who may be experiencing loneliness, exacerbated by the pandemic and most recent period of lockdown. Strand One of the Culture Co-operative aims to reach the elderly who may feel isolated in Care Homes during the lockdown period.

We have been working closely with Mick Jenkinson the Read 2 Write group for this strand. In April we launched the first poetry anthology created by the Read 2 Write group which is a beautiful reflection of the lockdown period from the perspective of the writers. You can read View From a Locked-Down Land and learn more about it here.

The anthology has been sent to Care Homes across Doncaster, along with a beautiful letter designed by Paul Ward at Evergreen Agency, asking the Care Home residents to take part in exercises if they want to be involved. The reflections and answers to the exercise will then be used to create a second anthology. We are looking forward to hearing the responses from the residents.

Packing the Letters

The team at Right Up Our Street came together in April to package the books and letters together so Beth could hand deliver the packages to the different Care Homes across Doncaster.

The team packed around 100 envelopes for the Care Homes. Each envelope included an anthology and a letter from Mick Jenkinson with the exercises to take part in and were closed and sealed with one of our lovely Culture Co-operative stamps.

Soon Beth will collect the responses from the Care Homes. We can’t wait to read the anthology created through the residents responses!

Beth and Rasha drove out into the communities to meet some of the Care Home Residents and pick up the responses they had from reading View From a Locked Down Land.
