St Leger’s 250th Anniversary
A partnership with Right Up Our Street and Heritage Doncaster, funded by the Heritage Lottery fund.
To celebrate the St Leger's 250th Anniversary, Right Up Our Street, in partnership with Heritage Doncaster and funded by the Heritage Lottery fund has collaborated with the community in Rossington and Denaby to create a vibrant collection of horse racing inspired silk sashes and festival flags.
Working with artists Karen Hall and Andy Welland, Right Up Our Street visited Denaby Main Academy, St Joseph's Catholic Primary School, The Royal Care Home, and Hesley Group's Mercury College.
Karen led workshops inviting participants to design a racing silk in the style of Andy's work, exploring different colours, shapes and patterns. She then brought these designs to life, handmaking over 90 sashes from the two areas.
Andy Welland then took inspiration from the fragments of shapes and patterns, translating them into designs for four enormous flags, which professional flag maker Shona Watt then handmade in silk.
All four flags and the full collection of sashes were displayed and celebrated at the Into the Park events in Rossington and Denaby. They will next be on show at the St Leger Family Fun Day on Sunday 13th September 2026 — with free family tickets available for the community to attend and see the designs in person.

Into the Park Craft Tent
Audience members of Into the Park were invited to create their own sashes to take home. Andy and Karen led workshops at both Into the Park days in Rossington and Denaby, sharing the history of the St. Leger Festival and encourage the community to create their own designs.
