ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
Machine Hallucinations : Large Nature Model Series is a unique addition to an expanding collection of works crafted using The Large Nature Model, the first open-source generative AI model focused on nature, pioneered by Refik Anadol Studio. For this ongoing research, Refik Anadol and his team have harnessed open-source data from prominent organisations such as the Smithsonian Institution, National Geographic, and London’s Natural History Museum. This collaborative effort has enabled the collection of a vast archive of images showcasing the diversity of fauna, flora, fungi, corals, and landscapes. At this year’s Doncaster Festival of Light, the series will be presented, featuring Coral, Flora and Fauna.
Machine Hallucinations — Large Nature Model: Coral
Machine Hallucinations — Large Nature Model: Coral offers mesmerising visualisations of an extensive collection of coral imagery. This Data Sculpture, showcased at the World Economic Forum 2023, draws inspiration from marine ecosystems and the critical condition of coral reefs. Harnessing around 100 million coral images as its foundational dataset, it underscores the need for coral preservation and sustainability. Through this initiative, Anadol aims to highlight pressing environmental concerns by crafting a simulated oceanic habitat.
Machine Hallucinations — Large Nature Model: Flora
Machine Hallucinations — Large Nature Model: Flora utilizes millions of floral images to create an unprecedented fusion of art and science. It serves as an homage to the complex and varied biological functions of plants, blending authentic color palettes with data-driven visualizations through the capabilities of AI. It underscores the importance of ecosystem conservation in sustaining our world, emphasizing how cutting-edge technology can aid in documenting and appreciating the rich diversity of plant life.
Machine Hallucinations — Large Nature Model: Fauna
Machine Hallucinations — Large Nature Model: Fauna is a captivating artwork by Refik Anadol Studio that specifically focuses on the animal kingdom, utilizing a dataset comprising over 400 million public images related to fauna, alongside elements of nature's vast panorama. It offers a revolutionary reinterpretation of our digital recollections of wildlife, illuminating the beauty and diversity of fauna to celebrate and elevate our collective appreciation of Earth's creatures. It is not only a dynamic, visual artwork but a thought-provoking piece that invites viewers to ponder the critical importance of wildlife conservation.

REFIK ANADOL
Refik Anadol (b. 1985, Istanbul, Turkey) is an internationally renowned media artist and pioneer in the aesthetics of data and machine intelligence. He is the Director and co-founder of Refik Anadol Studio in Los Angeles and teaching at UCLA’s Department of Design Media Arts from which he obtained a Master of Fine Arts. Refik Anadol Studio brings together a globally diverse team of designers, architects, data scientists, and researchers—originating from 10 countries and fluent in 12 languages—who share a deep commitment to inclusion, equity, and cross-cultural collaboration at every stage of artistic production. Anadol is also the co-founder of Dataland, the world’s first Museum of AI Arts. Opening at The Grand LA in 2025, Dataland promises unparalleled, multisensory experiences at a scale and quality never before realised with real-time interactions between museum and audience.
Refik Anadol’s work locates creativity at the intersection of humans and machines. Taking the data that surrounds us as primary material, and the neural network of a computerized mind as a collaborator, Anadol offers us radical visualizations of our digitized memories and expands the possibilities of interdisciplinary arts. Anadol’s AI data paintings and sculptures, live audio/visual performances, and immersive installations take many forms, while encouraging us to rethink our engagement with the physical world, public art, decentralized networks, and the creative potential of AI. Entire buildings come to life. Floors, walls, and ceilings disappear into infinity. Breathtaking aesthetics take shape from large swaths of data, and what was once invisible to the human eye becomes visible, offering the audience a new perspective on, and narrative of their environments.
